Irish Examiner Column 15/2/21: Irish Oul Lads turn into Ted Danson
If we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere. Seamus Heaney only said this the once, in 1972. And then everyone else said it in 2020.
Irish Examiner Column: The perfect Valentine's Day gift - a zombie plan for the one you love
Valentines Day: I’m not imagining much of a date night at the moment. I expect the children to slope off to bed after the usual three-hour filibuster.
Life is at 0.75x speed anyway, but throw in the sudden thirst, an onrush of appetite like a sumo wrestler training for a basho, having eaten like an unhappy 1980s supermodel all day, WHEN THE FOOD WAS PLACED IN FRONT OF THEM FOR FECK'S SAKE…
Irish Examiner Column: Home-schooling Irish and I’m learning a bit too.
"Tá an bosca dearg. Tá an peann gorm," says my daughter. "Maith an cailín," says I and press the stop-recording button on the phone and upload the video back to her teacher.
The Function Room Podcast -episode 8 Algorithm & Blues
This time on the function room, advertising algorithms start to annoy Ruby so I decided to find out a bit more. And who better to talk to than someone the New York Times described as one of the most valuable observers of Big Data. She is American mathematician, data scientist, and author of Weapons of Math Destruction and budding movie star, Cathy O’Neill.
Irish Examiner Column: Holidays? My expectations are on the floor
Holidays. We can dream, can’t we? Dreams are not vectors for infection yet. You will not get stopped by the gardaí for dreaming outside your 5km zone. Unless it’s an extreme case of sleep-walking.

The Function Room Podcast Ep7- The Solace of Quantum
This time on the Function Room. It's the little things. The really little things. As Ruby(5) and Lily(3) theorise about the computers a fairy might use, I talk to UCD's John Sheekey about Quantum Computers. I got thinking about it before Christmas when Chinese scientists announced another quantum computing breakthrough.

Life Goal Achieved - The CHristmas RTE Guide!
I wrote an original short story for the RTE Guide! It’s about my novels’ hero Ann Devine as she races against time to ensure the Zoom Nativity isn’t a pure disaster!
It was a busy Christmas!
It was a strange Christmas . But people needed something to celebrate. So they called me!
The Function Room Podcast Ep6- a live one on a stage!
My mathsy podcast The Function Room is back! There was a bit of a hiatus as some paying work came in and I had to take it because well ... you do the math.
A special Christmas episode recorded in an actual theatre. With actual people. Just sound technicians as events are still banned due to me being TOO FUNNY. This was a fun episode with fellow comedian and fellow former engineer Eleanor Tiernan
The Way We Were - Episode 1
You might have seen my lockdown #1 hair joined by the rest of me play a small role in the The Way We Were on RTE 1 on January 3rd. It's a shamelessly enjoyable nostalgia-fest about various aspects of Ireland in the 20th century. Episode 1 is about holidays.
I hosted a panel show!
A radio comedy Panel show. Yes an actual comedy panel show on Radio 1 for the first time in a number of yonks.
I was host and it was such fun to work with the youngest group of people to be on an RTE 1 programme since the Toy Show. Big Dirty Fry, Emma Doran, Justine Stafford Tony Cantwell and writing from Aidan Fitzmaurice and produced by Pat O'Mahony
Colm O’Regan Wants a Word X 2
I recorded two episodes of Colm O’Regan Wants A Word just before Christmas. It was a double bill about Building Ireland Back Better. Episode 1 Half an hour of comedy and fun chat with the very funny Patrick Freyne -he of the brilliant TV reviews and great book 'Let's Do Your Stupid Idea'- about how to rebuild Ireland culturally in 2021 once we all recover from the plague.
let me be your online event mc!
Does your online corporate, teambuilding, communications event need a bit of zhuzh? Maybe I can help. With green screen and high quality recording and audio visual equipment I can facilitate it here at home. Or if you are booking a studio I have worked with Ireland’s top organisations and production companies to bring an entertaining event that really connects with employees and service users.
My first home studio voice over
I am doing the voiceover for the Bord Gais Hurling Championship GAA GAA Box online series.
For the first time, I am recording voice-over at home with a Rode NT USB Mike onto ZenCastr.com with soundproofing provided by a foam mike screen and a couple of cot-mattresses but it works a treat!
